Motion Software highlights technology benefits for lifting and handling sector

Motion Software – an innovative Aberdeen company with a global outlook – believes companies in the lifting and handling sector can cuts costs and improve their service to clients by using the latest software and hardware technology.

Inspecting and certifying equipment such as cranes and containers has its own set of issues from allocating engineer visits and complying with industry standards to compiling up-to-date analysis for a client’s senior management. However, using a software solution specifically designed for this sector of the oil and gas industry can improve staff efficiency, enhance safety and save money.

Motion Software – a leading energy industry software and hardware specialist – expects to increase sales over the next 12 months for its innovative aspire inspection product, which can handle a range of tasks including asset management, cyclical certification and maintenance.

The start-to-finish solution integrates with a company’s existing IT set-up and allows clients to capitalise on the benefits of mobile computing such as laptops and handheld technology.

Stephen Burt, Managing Director of Motion Software, said: “We believe our system is the only one currently on the market specifically designed for inspection in the offshore industry that also integrates mobile computing technology such as PDAs.”

Aspire mobile – the software used on Motion Software handhelds – has passed the Designed for Windows Mobile 6 standard and is the only product specifically designed for the energy sector that has this level of classification. Handheld technology can be used with a barcode system to speed up the inspection process and, therefore, reduce the risk of human error.

Four key steps – tasking engineer and sending them to installation or vessel, providing task and historical information to engineer; allowing engineer to send report immediately into a company’s system and flagging analysis to senior management – are all delivered into this centralised and automated solution.

An integrated web-based portal where reports can be automatically published for customer and engineer access can also be delivered.

Aspire inspection is an essential tool for companies in the lifting inspection and certification sector that have to comply with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations). The system can also be provided for fast track hose management and cycle inspection and again plays a key role in the process of complying with industry standards.

Features also include an automatic system highlighting which products are due for inspection and improved synchronisation capabilities between the office and the person tasked with the inspection.

Managing Director Stephen Burt added: “Companies are looking to speed up the inspection process to save time and money and our aspire product can do this.

“Previously recorded information, schedules and reports can be accessed by an engineer whether they are on an offshore installation or a vessel. The engineer can even undertake work in situations where an Internet connection may not be available.

“At the moment many organisations use paper-based systems driven or spreadsheets where information is recorded and then keyed in again. This is doubling the workload.

“Our system – using software and hardware solutions – tasks the engineer, records the certification and inspection process and sends reports in synchronisation on to the web or a company’s network.

“For example, an offshore engineer using intrinsically safe handheld technology can file their report on lifting equipment straight into a company’s system. This saves time and ensures the client is informed of any equipment issues within hours, while a paper-based may take days to highlight a potential problem.

“It’s very much a proactive solution where potential issues are flagged in advance.”

“Aspire inspection is user friendly with a Microsoft Office type interface allowing quick and easy access of data by staff, management and client. The software can be upgraded to support other parts of the business.”

“Our experienced team is used to deploying complex cycle solutions for the oil and gas industry and we can have aspire inspection up and running at a company within six to eight weeks.”

The aspire solution is specifically designed for managing inspection and certification, but Motion Software can provide solutions to cover equipment sales, rental and repair ¬– recording each stage of a company’s process including tender, order processing, equipment hire. The ‘enquiry-to-billing’ solution allows a central documentation system to integrate with a company’s existing accountancy packages.

The company, which recently secured contracts for work in Aberdeen, Dubai, Norway and Perth, Australia, has been awarded Microsoft Gold Partner status in recognition of its innovative implementation and deployment of its technology.

Motion Software will be exhibiting for the first time at September’s Offshore Europe event at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. The company will be based at stand A21.
